History of Gwalior

The history of Gwalior dates back to prehistoric times. Paleolithic tools, Stone Age rock paintings and Iron Age pottery have been discovered in and around the region.

The ancient name of Gwalior was Gopadri or Gopgiri. The region is also associated with references from the Mahabharata. During the 2nd century AD, the area was connected with the Nagvansha dynasty, which developed around the Vidisha and Gwalior region.

One of the notable rulers was Bhimnag, who moved his capital from Vidisha to Padmavati, present-day Pawaya, near Gwalior. Coins, sculptures and archaeological remains discovered in the area provide valuable evidence of its ancient history.

The legendary Gwalior Fort is traditionally believed to date back to the 5th century and is associated with the Rajput prince Suraj Sen. Over the centuries, Gwalior came under the control of several dynasties and rulers, becoming an important political and military centre.

In 1021 AD, Gwalior was attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni. The region later witnessed the rule of different powers, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of architecture, art and history.

Gwalior is located at an altitude of approximately 188 metres and experiences significant variations in temperature throughout the year.
