History of Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Benaras, is one of the oldest living cities in the world and has been an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus for centuries. According to Hindu belief, Varanasi is associated with Lord Shiva and the sacred River Ganges. The city has been a major centre of learning, culture, philosophy, spirituality, arts and crafts for more than 3,000 years.

Located close to Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, Varanasi has played an important role in the development of Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also an important pilgrimage centre for Jains and is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Parshvanath, the twenty-third Tirthankara.

Vaishnavism and Shaivism have coexisted in Varanasi for centuries. The city has also been associated with Ayurveda, Sanskrit, yoga and Hindi literature. Varanasi is particularly famous for its silk and gold and silver brocade industry.

Climate of Varanasi

Varanasi has a hot and humid summer climate. During summer, temperatures can reach around 45°C. The monsoon generally arrives in late June or early July and brings heavy rainfall and high humidity.

Winters are pleasant, with temperatures sometimes falling to around 7°C. The most favourable period for tourists is generally from October to April.

By Air

Varanasi is served by the airport at Babatpur, located approximately 22 km from Varanasi and around 30 km from Sarnath. The city has air connections with major destinations including New Delhi, Agra, Khajuraho, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow and Bhubaneswar.

By Train

Varanasi is an important railway junction and is served by trains connecting it with metropolitan cities and major destinations across India.

By Road

Varanasi is well connected by road through major national highways. Important road connections include NH2 towards Delhi and Kolkata, NH7 towards Kanyakumari and NH29 towards Gorakhpur.
