History of Indore: From Pilgrimage Centre to Commercial Capital

Origin and Foundation of Indore

During the 18th century, the Marathas used this territory as a transit point during their campaigns towards northern India. Local Zamindars, attracted by commercial opportunities, began settling in the region around 1715 and established a flourishing centre of trade.

In 1741, the Indreshwar Temple was constructed, from which the modern name of the city, Indore, is believed to have originated.

The Rise of Indore Under the Holkars

Indore received its major development under the rule of the Holkar dynasty (1733-1818), which established the city as an important administrative and commercial centre.

Rajwada, the historic palace located in the heart of the city, remains one of the most important symbols of this period of prosperity.

In 1818, following the Battle of Mahidpur, British forces under the command of Sir John Malcolm defeated the Holkars. Subsequently, Queen Krishnabai Holkar signed the Treaty of Mandsaur, through which control of Indore passed to the British East India Company.

Later, between 1948 and 1956, Indore served as the summer capital of Madhya Bharat. Today, the city is recognised as the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, with a modern economy, developed infrastructure and a strong cultural identity.
