History of Jodhpur: The City Founded by Rao Jodha

The history of Jodhpur dates back to 1459, when it was founded by Rao Jodha, leader of the Rathore clan. The city was named after him. It was previously known as Marwar and gradually became one of the most important cities in Rajasthan.

The Rathores, originally from Kannauj, were driven out by Afghan invasions and settled near Mandore, 9 km from present-day Jodhpur. Mandore was their first capital, but Rao Jodha decided to establish a new fortified city: Jodhpur. Thus, this legendary city was born, with its imposing Mehrangarh Fort dominating the landscape from the top of a hill.

For centuries, the Rathores maintained relations with the Mughal emperors, except Aurangzeb. Maharaja Jaswant Singh even supported Shah Jahan in his struggle for the throne. Later, Maharaja Ajit Singh succeeded in expelling the Mughals from Ajmer and expanded his territory. During the British period, Jodhpur prospered through trade, and after independence in 1947, it became part of modern India as the second most important city in Rajasthan.

Culture of Jodhpur: Colours, Traditions and Hospitality

The culture of Jodhpur is a vibrant blend of Rajput and Marwari traditions. The people are known for their hospitality, colourful turbans, traditional jewellery worn by women and festive lifestyle. Women wear wide skirts and decorated blouses, while men wear riding trousers, a garment that originated in this city.

One of the most representative events is the Marwar Festival, where local folklore is celebrated through music, dances and colourful traditional costumes. In its markets, you can find handicrafts, fabrics dyed using the bandhani technique, traditional footwear (mojari), silver jewellery, hand-painted miniatures and antiques.

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort is the most impressive monument in Jodhpur. Built by Rao Jodha, it stands on a hill 150 metres high and offers panoramic views of the entire Blue City. To reach the top, visitors pass through seven historic gates, some of which bear marks from battles. The fort houses a museum displaying royal thrones, weapons, palanquins and traditional costumes.
