History of Udaipur: The Royal City of the Sisodia Rajputs

The history of Udaipur begins with a legend. During a hunting expedition, Maharana Udai Singh II encountered a sage meditating beside a lake in the Aravalli range. The saint advised him to establish a city in that location, giving rise to Udaipur. As a tribute, the Dhuni Mata shrine was built at the same spot.

Before the formal founding of the city, the Nouchouki pond already existed, having been excavated by a gypsy woman in the 15th century. The Maharana expanded this lake and created Lake Pichola, now one of the most iconic places to see in Udaipur.

Over the centuries, Udaipur became the capital of the kingdom of Mewar. Unlike many other kingdoms in India, the rulers of Udaipur never accepted submission to the Mughal Empire.
